How to Optimise a website

How to optimise your website SEO:

A very common error with seo that web masters make when optimising a clients website is that they often forget about the importance of subject matter, good quality content on every page, this is the text that website visitors will read and also this is important to the search engine spiders.

The information on each page, the text, is also read by the search engine spiders, or bots, to find relevant keywords and key phrases about your product or service, this needs to be matched up with the keywords and phrases in your page titles and Meta tags.

When people type a keyword or key phrase into a search engine to find your product or service and you have added the right amount of keywords in the right places throught your web pages , you have a much better chance of being found on the first or second page, this is the ultimate goal in seo.

Lets say, for example, your website was selling cars, you wouldn’t want to try and optimize for the word “Cars”, the competition for this would be too much, and it would be better use such terms as small economical cars, cheap family saloon, sports hatchback.

Another good way of filtering out the searchers that wouldn’t be relevant to you, say, your selling a small car, no one is going to travel 300 miles to view it, stick to good key phrases such as small family car east London for example.

A lot of people just search for their local area, such as a plumber, you wouldn’t just search for plumber, you will get too many irrelevant results, you would type in plumber and then your area, such as Plumber in Boston, so this would be how to optimize your pages if you were a plumber in Boston.

There are many other important elements of search engine marketing, such as getting links from other websites than sell a similar product or service to you, but not the same.

The title tag is the first part the search engines will read, second, it’s the Meta tags, your description and the keyword tag, the search engine spider then reads through your page, in the part you cant see, the source code, and has to match up what’s in your Meta tags with the content (text), that is on your page, these four elements are critical .

It’s common knowledge that pages that are built entirely in flash or those that just have a series of images will not rank as well as pages that have plenty of relevant content, because as everyone knows, content is king.

An all too common mistake so many people make with their websites is using the same title and Meta tags on every single web page , such an easy fix that will make a big difference to your positions.

Another mistake is the links in your site that can’t be followed by a search engine spider, or bot, the easy fix for this is to add a textual site map, but of course, the best option is to use search engine friendly navigation.

Do try and remember, getting your website on the first or secondpage of any major search engine is not going to happen overnight, it takes time and effort and a good helping of skill.
