To Tweet or Not to Tweet – That is the Question
When I first was introduced to Twitter, I thought that it was pretty much a silly social media website, that would do nothing but get a lot of people into trouble for tweeting out their personal business – and while it has done that; ask the lady who got fired from her job or did not get the job for tweeting, if Twitter is worth it on a personal level. Then I saw big companies such as CNN, AP and McDonalds using it, I found out quickly that it was more about how you used it.
For our EPK creation and electronic press kit business, we use it to announce the cutting-edge press releases that are often submitted by publicist looking to get the information about their artists out to the public, faster. I never tweet much about personal thing occurring, as a matter of fact, I only have about 80 followers on my own personal page, because I have not found that balance of using it to my personal reward – if it is even advantageous at all.
I often wonder, though it is powerful now, if used as it should be used, will it become a fad just as MySpace has evidently become these days? Will young people grow tired of it, because, let’s face it, they are the ones that will keep something trendy. Yes, I use it for business purposes now, to allow for what we have to say, to extend further, but let’s face it, nothing good last forever and a day, so I say to that for now, people need to appreciate the tool for what it is, and not use it idly, when it can be used to bring in business opportunities and brand awareness – the type that you could never buy, even if you opt to buy an ad in your local newspaper.
So, tweet on, but don’t make it personal, make it strictly business – they have gotten theirs by creating the tool, now you make sure that you get yours. The power is there, and it is up to you.
